SUR-RON e-Bikes

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety Issues, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

The Gedling Neighbourhood Policing team are currently putting together a problem solving plan when it comes to the nuisance that is SUR-RON E-bikes.

The need for a licence to ride a sur-ron depends on its model and road legality in the UK. Road-legal sur-ron’s require:
• A valid driving licence, such as a CBT certificate or a full driving licence.
• A registration number plate.
• Insurance.
• Compliance with UK regulations including to wear a helmet.
Off-road models do not require these for riding on private land, however, if they come onto the road then they are required to have all of these otherwise they can be seized by the police and won’t be returned unless all of the above is available to view.

The difficulty that the police has is being able to get hold of these riders and being able to deal with them appropriately, like with off-road motorbikes. Because of this we are liasing with other neighbourhood teams around the county and putting together a plan to be able to tackle the problem effectively.

This is where you come in...

If you see any of these bikes or have any issues in your area, if you can call 101 and give any further information such as description of the rider, description of the bike, their direction of travel.
This will help us in our scanning phase to be able to analyse the data to see where the problems are most prevalent and be able to form a plan to deal with this robustly.

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
